What texts and materials do teachers have in their classrooms that support students' development of fluent reading? A student library is a great way to encourage independent reading on an individual level and promote fluent reading. When children have a choice of books on varying levels, they are able to choose the one they feel is most appropriate for them. When a students read books on the proper level of understanding and decoding, fluency is more likely to develop within student's reading. Additionally, a selection of books in a library setting gives the students a positive outlook toward the reading sessions.
How do they select vocabulary to teach in all areas of your curriculum? Teachers should choose words to teach based on students level of understanding, knowledge, and background. These words can be either those that are used often and necessary for general education. Or, words that are part of the science or math curriculum. In general when choosing vocabulary teachers show the context of where they come into real life and even use it in the classroom to promote understanding.
How much time do they allocate to word study? 10 -15 minutes a day should be spent introducing the new words and explaining when they are used. Teachers can choose different reading lessons to focus on words that they feel are important. For example, read aloud, reading centers, independent reading, guided reading can focus on specific vocabulary words that have been taught that day/week.
What word study routines do they teach and encourage their students to use? There are many reading strategies that teachers use. Two that I've adapted into my classroom is based on guidance from more experienced teachers. First, dividing the word into segments, finding the root of the word, prefixes, and suffixes all help students decode words and promote understanding. Second, reading a sentence without the difficult word and adding in a word that "fits" helps students interpret the meaning of new words.
How do they differentiate instruction and tasks based on their students' needs? Teachers create reading groups according to level to ensure learning for every student. Also different learning centers that incorporate different intelligence help students learn in the way they learn best.
